From ancient times people have been interested in the healing properties of licorice. Licorice is one of the most common plants among the medicinal plants, which are applied industrially. The underground part of the plant is used as a raw material. The component contained in the licorice root, glycyrrhizic acid gives it the major healing effect, as well as it also contributes to the sweetness of licorice root. Glycyrrhizinic acid is 30-50 times sweeter than sucrose. Thus, the content of glycyrrhizic acid determines to quality of licorice roots. Therefore, European Pharmacopoeia has proposed the method for quantitative determination of glycyrrhizic acid in the licorice roots based on high-performance liquid chromatography. This method uses a chromatographic column packed with fully porous silica on which the analysis time is too long and the amount of a consumed mobile phase is high. Our goal was to develop a new method for quantitative determination of glycyrrhizic acid in licorice roots based on the high-efficiency column packed with superficially porous silica. With the new method the analysis time was significantly shortened and the consumption of the mobile phase reduced.
